How to Choose Lighting for a Stretch Ceiling

Lighting is the key to atmosphere

A stretch ceiling without well-planned lighting is like a car without an engine. It looks nice, but you're not using its full potential. Integrating LED lighting directly into the ceiling is one of the biggest advantages of stretch ceilings over traditional solutions.

Types of lighting for stretch ceilings

1. Spot lights

The most common choice for even room lighting. Recessed spot lights are nearly invisible and provide direct light exactly where you need it.

Ideal for: kitchens, bathrooms, hallways, offices

Tip: Plan approximately 1 spot per 1.5–2 m². Above kitchen work surfaces, you can increase the density.

2. LED strips

Continuous lines of light around the perimeter or in the centre of the ceiling. LED strips create soft, indirect lighting that is ideal as ambient light.

Ideal for: living rooms, bedrooms, wellness areas

Tip: Choose LED strips with adjustable colour temperature (warm/cool). You'll appreciate warm light in the evening and cool light when working.

3. Design LED lines

Geometric shapes (lines, squares, diamonds) created from LED profiles under the stretch ceiling. They function as both main lighting and a design element.

Ideal for: modern interiors, hallways, representative spaces

4. Translucent ceiling backlighting

Translucent film with LED panels behind it creates the effect of an evenly lit surface. The result resembles a giant light panel or a glowing window to the sky.

Ideal for: bathrooms, waiting rooms, wellness, luxury interiors

5. Starry sky

Optical fibres threaded through the film simulate a starry sky. A romantic and relaxing element loved by children and adults alike.

Ideal for: bedrooms, children's rooms, home cinemas

How to combine multiple types

The best results come from combining:

  • Spot lights for functional lighting (reading, cooking)
  • LED strips for ambient atmosphere (evening relaxation)
  • Design lines as the main visual element

Each circuit should be on a separate switch or dimmer so you can switch between modes.

What to watch out for

  • Colour temperature: for homes we recommend 2700–3000 K (warm white). For offices 4000 K (neutral white).
  • Dimmability: invest in dimmable sources. The price difference is minimal, but the comfort is huge.
  • Power supply: LED sources need a transformer (driver). Make sure there's enough space above the ceiling.
  • Light positioning: plan the layout before ceiling installation. Subsequent changes are possible but more complicated.

How much does it cost?

Lighting typeIndicative price (incl. installation)Main advantage
Spot light (standard)from 350 CZK / pcAffordable, easy to replace
LED strip (perimeter)from 980 CZK / rmAmazing atmosphere, optical enlargement
Design LED lineIndividual quoteFuturistic look, high output
Starry sky (set)from 15,000 CZK / roomUnique visual experience
Translucent ceiling (backlight)from 900 CZK / m²Perfect imitation of daylight

Smart Home integration

Modern LED lighting in a stretch ceiling can be connected to a smart home system. Control lights by voice, phone or automatic scenarios: morning wake-up, movie mode, night mode.

StropDesign offers Smart Home integration as an add-on service.

Summary

Lighting is an investment that fundamentally affects how you feel in a room. A stretch ceiling gives you a unique opportunity to integrate light directly into the architecture of the space: cleanly, elegantly and functionally.
